Three Longer Toddler Friendly Hikes
We are a small family based on the beautiful Sunshine Coast, and one of our favourite things to do together is go for a hike or walk on local trails.
Recently we have been stretching out our walks a little longer, mixing a combination of carrier and then toddler doing their own hiking.
Here’s three longer hikes that we have done on the Sunshine Coast this month that our toddler and the whole family have loved.
Strangler Cairn - Conondale National Park
Discover the breathtaking beauty of Conondale National Park, a hidden gem in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. To reach the trailhead, be prepared for an adventurous drive with multiple river crossings, requiring a car with sufficient clearance.
Once you've arrived, the trail itself offers an exciting experience for little hikers, featuring another river crossing to navigate on foot. This natural obstacle adds a fun and unique element to the walk, with changing water levels and currents depending on recent rainfall. Ensure you check the river conditions beforehand and exercise caution when crossing, either by wading through the water or rock-hopping, and always prioritize your little one's safety by holding them close or carrying them across.
Our recent experiences with this walk have varied from crossing at higher water levels, where we removed our shoes, to rock-hopping at lower levels – a testament to the dynamic nature of this enchanting trail.
2. Piccabeen Circuit - Mapleton National Park
Discover the delights of the Piccabean Circuit in Mapleton National Park, a wonderful loop walk perfect for adventurous families. This hike offers the ideal opportunity for your little one to explore and experience the thrill of walking, with regular breaks to hop into the baby carrier when needed.
Along the way, marvel at the towering gum trees of Leafy Lane, and enjoy the excitement of creek crossings (mind the mud after the rain!). With some elevation gain, be sure to pack snacks and refillable water bottles to keep your energy levels up. This scenic adventure is a must-do for families, offering a mix of exploration, exercise and quality time together.
3. Mooloolah River National Park
Create your own adventure in Mooloolah River National Park, where a network of trails invites exploration! We love embarking on an out-and-back track, perfect for families with little ones. The mostly flat terrain and minimal elevation gain make it an ideal setting for your child to walk at their own pace, whether that’s a short stroll or a longer hike. Just be aware that the park can become swampy during or after rain, and there’s a little river crossing to navigate. With flexibility and freedom to roam, this park is a haven for families seeking an unforgettable outdoor experience.
