How to Dress Your Baby or Toddler for Cold Weather Adventures

Dressing Your Baby or Toddler for Cold Weather Adventures

As the temperatures drop, don't let the chill stop your outdoor adventures with your little one! With the right gear and layering, you can keep exploring and enjoying quality time together.

Our Top 3 Tips for Keeping Your Little One Warm and Snug:

  1. Wear Layers

Dressing your little one in weather appropriate layers is absolute key for you and your little one enjoying going out when the weather is cooler. We have found that dressing in good quality layers is essential, and we dress our little one in the same way that we dress ourselves with three basic layers.

First Layer:

The first layer that we put on our little one is a thermal base layer, our go to is a merino thermal base layer in the long-sleeved t-shirt and long johns. It’s important to remember that whilst keeping the chest warm, we shouldn’t forget out about the legs either!

Second Layer:

The second layer that we reach for is a fleece, this could be made from wool or recycled polyester.

Third Layer:

The outer layer we usually pick pending the weather, if it is really cold we might reach for an insulated jacket, which could be a puffer jacket, or even just another thick jumper. But usually the outer layer we like to have a little bit of wind proofing or water proofing, so a ski jacket or a a mountain suit to keep them warm and toasty from their heads to their toes. Mountain suits are awesome choices too, as theres no way that the cold wind, rain or snow will slip between layers if a top rides up etc.

2. Good footwear

Choosing the right footwear for your little ones adventure is equally as important as choosing your own. In cooler weather we opt for a shoe with high ankle cuffs. Pairing good shoes with some warmer socks is essential to keeping toes and feet warm and breathable.

3. Keep the hands warm

Last but not least, keeping the little fingers and thumbs warm is absolutely essential! Like the cherry on the top of the cake, gloves and mittens can be easily over looked, forgotten or lost. Though we have found that this can sometimes be the deciding factor on how much your little one enjoys being outside in the cooler weather. It can allow them to engage with the world around them, with a warm barrier between.
