Three Toddler Friendly Hikes On The Sunshine Coast

We are a small family based on the beautiful Sunshine Coast, and one of our favourite things to do together is go for a hike or walk on local trails.

Here’s three hikes that we have done on the Sunshine Coast this month that our toddler and the whole family have loved.

  1. Tibrogargan Circuit

The Glasshouse Mountains is a not so secret gem on the Sunshine Coast, and sometimes takes a little further to get to, but is always worth the extra effort and drive time.

This was a new hike for our family (we have run this as a trail run before), and we were looking forward to taking it slow and soaking up all the sights. This loop circumnavigates Mount Tibrogargan and offers sneaky peeks (or should we say peaks) of the surrounding Glasshouse Mountains.

It is a challenge to the younger toddler as the distance verges on a little too far. We took our Osprey Poco Plus Child Carrier and supplemented some free lifts for our families lift, while letting them down to do as much of the hike as they pleased. We were impressed that our little one completed almost the whole hike unaided.

The trail itself offers rock steps, and a groomed trail which provides lots of entertainment and developmental challenges to little people. There were beautiful little bridges along the way that provided points of interest, excitement and broke up the usual trail.

2. Buderim Tramway Trail

The Tramway Trail is accessible from Telco Road off of Mons Road. A gently sloping walk through a beautiful tall avenue of trees, this out and back walk is perfect for a stretch of those little legs.

This was a hike that we started early on with our little walker, and we found it was a perfect spot to start if you haven’t done much walking or hiking with your toddler before. Being an out and back walk, you can turn at anytime.

As the name suggests, the Buderim Tramway Trail follows a heritage tramway and there’s lots of fabulous information on the trains that use to pass through this area. Along the way there are signs showing points of interest. If your little one is interested in trains, they might find this interesting, and maybe even motivational.

3. Buderim Waterfall Loop

Is it ever too soon to start chasing waterfalls? This loop walk is a hit with the little ones, with creek crossings, bridges, and waterfalls to look at and experience.

From the upper car park that can be accessed via Quorn Close, we enjoy an anti-clockwise loop. This direction takes you gently down the slope, before the reward of the bridge and views of the beautiful waterfall towards the end of the walk. There is a bit of a sharp hike back up the hill to return to the carpark, and the stairs can be a bit uneven, something your toddler will love to challenge their ever growing skills.

Be sure to pack some spare clothes, as this trail gets a bit muddy after a bit of rain.
