Top Three Sunset Spots of the Flinders Ranges
The Flinders Ranges in South Australia features dusty red vistas, with dramatic mountains and cliff faces in what feels like every direction. With the incredible geological history that is on display, there are insanely beautiful sunsets to be had in this region. During a recent trip, we made an effort to get out each afternoon to enjoy a beautiful sunset picnic in a different location each day, and they did not disappoint.
Here is our top three vantage points to witness the most amazing sunsets that the Flinders Ranges have on offer.
Number One
Depending on where are staying in the Flinders Ranges precinct, you will find a breathtaking sunset close to your accommodation. If you have done a big day of driving from Adelaide, like we did, you won’t be wanting to get back in the car to see your first Flinders sunset. So instead let’s stretch our legs and go for a walk close to home.
If you are staying at the Rawnsley Park Station, venture out of your room at sunset to enjoy views in not just one but two different directions! Head out for a short walk on an easy to find gravel path from the eco-cabins and you will be spoilt to the incredible vistas of Rawnsley Bluff and Mount Havelock.
Number Two
After your first full day of exploring in the Flinders Ranges, it's time to relax, kick back and watch the magic of Mother Nature. The next sunset spot is at Pugilist Hill. With a sharp drive on a gravel road up to the top of a little rise, Pugilist Hill is the perfect vantage point for a magnificent sunset. We popped the boot of our car up, laid down the picnic rug, cracked open a beautiful bottle of South Australian Shiraz and marvelled at the fiery red cliffs as the sun lit up the Mount Havelock Range. We enjoyed views of the Mount Havelock Range the previous night, but being a little bit closer this time , the views were really jaw dropping. Sit a while longer as the sun goes down, as the constant changing of the colours give a new gift with every minute.
Number Three
Station Hill Lookout takes you to a raised outlook boasting spectacular views of Rawnsley Bluff. Get there before the sunsets, and stay to watch the colours change all around you once the sun has gone down. The grasses light up, the bluff then takes its turn, before everything turns a buttery pink hue.
